Training a New Window Cleaning Tech on the App in One Ride-Along

Teaching someone to clean windows well takes weeks: squeegee technique, detailing edges, ladder work, reading glass for scratches and seal failures. Teaching them the app should take one day. If it takes longer, the app is asking too much or the training is in the wrong order. Here is a ride-along plan that gets a new tech running their own list by the afternoon.

Before the Ride-Along

The office side of each Complete was covered in What the Office Sees When a Window Cleaning Tech Completes a Job. A new tech does not need to know all of that on day one, but they should understand that the office is watching the board and that their taps matter.

Before the new hire's first morning, the office sets them up as an employee with a personal PIN and assigns them to a van. That is all the prep it takes.

At the Shop: Login and Time Clock

Start at the shop, not in the first driveway:

Also cover the phone safety rules on day one: read the card on the ground, phone secured or left on the ground on the ladder, dry hands before tapping. These habits are easier to start right than to fix later. The full list is in Using the Window Cleaning App With Wet Hands and Around Ladders.

Job One: You Drive, You Tap, They Watch

On the first job, the trainer does everything while narrating:

The point is for the new tech to see that the app is a few short moments at the start and end of the job, not something that gets in the way of the work.

Job Two: They Tap, You Watch

Hand over the phone. The new tech reads the card out loud, takes the before photos, taps Start, and at the end runs the checklist, takes the after photos and taps Complete. The trainer only steps in if something is about to go wrong.

The most common day-one mistakes are reading the card too quickly, especially the sides and extras, and tapping Complete before the after photos. Catch those here, kindly, and they rarely come back. Window Count, Stories, Sides and Extras: Reading Every Job Card in the Window Cleaning App is a good thing to send them that evening.

Job Three and Beyond: Practice the Odd Cases

By the third job, the routine is familiar. Use the rest of the day to cover the cases that do not happen every job:

After the Ride-Along

For the first week, the owner or office can glance over the new tech's completed jobs each evening: are there before and after photos, are the notes useful, did anything get completed that looks unfinished? A short, specific comment the next morning is worth more than a long review later.

Pair the new tech with simpler routes first: 1-story outside-only houses, or a storefront route with familiar stops. Save the 3+ story inside-and-outside jobs for when their cleaning skills, not just their app skills, are ready.

App Skills in a Day, Cleaning Skills Over Time

The app part of training should be the easy part. One ride-along covers login, the card, the three buttons, photos, notes and the time clock, and the rest of the training time can go to glass and ladders where it belongs. For the full overview, visit the WindowBossPro window cleaning app page.
